Tembang

Bapak used some of the words in these melodies in Susila Budhi Dharma. However, his intention was to write the chapters of Susila Budi Dharma in the meaning as well as the spirit of these melodies. As such, Susila Budhi Dharma is one of the classic "sung books" of the world religious communities (although not a religion itself), which we also have in Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and others. It is therefore important that the language of these melodies, which Bapak used in his book, not be lost. That is the reason for this collection.
These recording are interesting because they come close to the mid-20th century reading style (a couple of decades after the writing of the Subud texts) and thus they have the kampung sounds in them - - roosters crowing, children playiing, street sounds. They are sung by one of the lead signers of Radio Republic Indonesia, Surakarta, in the mid-to-late 20the century, Pak Sastrotoegijo, of Delanggu, Central Java. The recordings were made in 1970 at my home in Kampung Sidorego, Surakarta.
The example of tembang Pucung is one stanza in slendro of Serat Wulang Reh. Wulang Reh is a long didactic serat attributed to Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwana IV (2 September 1768-1 October 1820). All other texts are excerpts taken from a full rendition of each of the tembang in Serat Rama, by Raden Ngabei Yasadipura II (b.?-1844) - Sulaiman Dufford - 2014
